These are some of my favorite posts to write and look back on, so I was excited when I asked you guys for suggestions on what you’d like to see on this blog and many of you said posts like this!
Funny enough, I chose to capture this particular day-in-the-life on Tuesday of this week, and it was a day where everything just went so smoothly. I honestly thought to myself on more than one occasion, “Do they know I’m documenting this day?!” Love sweet days like that.
Ryan woke up about an hour before his sisters, so we got lots of what he likes to call “special time” together. We built blocks, colored, and watched a show together- which happens to be one of his favorite quality time activities. It was a sweet start to the day having so much time with just him!
Once his sisters were up, I fed them both breakfast, got them dressed, and they all had a few minutes to play before we left for school. I had planned to take them outside for our verse-of-the-week picture, but when I looked over and saw them all playing so sweetly, I snuck the chalkboard with our verse near where they were playing, snapped a quick pic, and called it a day. That post went up on Instagram yesterday morning. (Photo and caption here.)
After playing, we all piled in the car and headed off to school!
Each morning we have school, we load up in the stroller for drop-off. It took me about a month of carrying two and trying to hold Ryan’s hand to realize we have a really great tool for this sort of thing. Hah!
Drop-off #1
Next up: Natalie’s class
Just me and this girl for the next few hours. 🙂
We’re hosting a BBQ fundraiser in our backyard this weekend for friends of our who are adopting from China (I’ll share more about this next week), so Emily and I made our way through Costco gathering everything we need for the big event.
And of course we stopped by to say hello to Mickey. 🙂
I love the way she waves to everyone we pass through the store.
When we got home, we said hello to Tally and played with some bubbles. Every time we pull in the garage, Emily looks up at the shelves and repeats, “Bub-ble, bub-ble.” She loves bubbles!
Then she wanted to take the lawn mover for a spin. We looped the cul-de-sac twice and walked halfway up our street and back. Sweet girl. After playing, we went in for lunch and headed back to Ryan and Natalie’s school for pickup.
As soon as we got out of the car, Emily said, “Bubba!” (her name for Ryan) 🙂 And as soon as Ryan saw Emily, he went over a gave her a kiss! Sweet love!
Some days, I’ll get the girls down for nap and let Ryan stay up with me. He’s been in the process of dropping his nap completely, and really only needs one a couple of times a week. So on the days where he doesn’t nap, I usually give him quiet time in his room for 45 minutes, and then we play together for the other 45 minutes before waking up his sisters. But this day, we took the entire nap time and did some baking with the apples we picked at the apple orchard this past weekend. We both love when we get to bake or cook together!
Ryan has been cracking eggs on his own for quite some time, and I have to say, he is a pro! Four years old and already a great little chef. 🙂
We made apple pie and pumpkin apple muffins. YUM!
Ready for the oven!
Recipes coming soon!!
Once a week, Matt and I give each other a night where one of us is on full kid duty from about 5:30 on so that the other person can have a night to do whatever. On Matt’s night, he’ll usually play golf or he’ll use his night for a work dinner. On my nights, I’ll either meet some girls for dinner, run errands solo, or stay home and work on Making Home Here. This night, Matt offered to take the kids to dinner so I had the whole house to myself! Being in a quiet, empty house is the strangest, most glorious thing in this season of life.
I did a quick workout while watching Shark Tank.
Then I made my favorite dinner for nights when I’m not cooking for anyone else. Rigatoni pasta with vodka sauce and loads of fresh parmesan. There’s really not much nutritional value to this meal, hah, but MAN is it good.
Then I went upstairs to do some laundry and listen to some worship music. This might be strange but because I really dislike folding laundry and steaming clothes, I typically set a timer (15-20 minutes) and knock out as much as I can during that stretch. It makes me work faster and not feel like the process is taking forever because I have a countdown showing exactly how long it’s taking. It’s weird. But it’s what I do.
Right as my timer was about to go off, Matt texted to let me know he was almost home with the kids (code: make your way to the basement so you can have the rest of your night. hah.) So to the basement I went and started working on Making Home Here posts and emails for about the next 45 minutes while Matt did bath and bed.
Matt came downstairs to meet me after the kids were asleep and told me about the night. It’s always fun to hear how they do with just one of us, and honestly, most of the time, they do just fine! It’s such a treat for us each to have a night to knock some things off of our to-do lists or do something we enjoy, and we’ve found it’s great for the kids to realize that each of us are 100% capable of doing all the things since they each have favorites for different parts of their nighttime routines. 😉
Tomorrow, I’ll be sharing the recipe for those yummy pumpkin apple muffins! Hope you all have a great day!
