Last night, we hosted a backyard bbq fundraiser for friends of ours who are adopting their second child from China. But what’s even more special about this adoption is that the precious 4-year-old boy they are adopting has Down Syndrome.
Meet Kai. Kai is one of 3,000 orphans currently up for adoption in China. Prior to 2011, kids with Kai’s congenital disorder caused by a duplication of the 21st chromosome were considered “unadoptable” and therefore the Chinese orphanages wouldn’t even create files for these kids.
This is even more staggering when you consider that currently kids with Down Syndrome make up 1/3 of the 3,000 adoptable orphans in China (adoptable meaning orphanages have written files that allow children a chance at being adopted).
According to Elisabeth McGinnis, a project manager for Bethany Christian Services, “if not adopted, these children have few options. Some of these kids will live in an institution for all of their lives while some of them will essentially be turned out on the streets.” (People.com article found here)
Our friends Lauren and Trey Boden and their two sweet boys Cade and Luke are committed to making one less orphan and being Kai’s forever family.
And today, we’re giving you the opportunity to be a part of this literally life-changing process as well.
For the next week, we will match every dollar that is donated by the Making Home Community to the Boden’s Adopt Together fund.
We would love to see 100 people and families donate $5 this week.
$5 is the cost of a Starbucks coffee, but $5 pooled with 99 other people’s $5 means that by the end of this week, the Boden family will $1000 closer to bringing Kai home.
Every dollar makes a difference. And if you decide to give, we think it would be really cool if you took this opportunity to talk to your kids about the choice your family is making to help give a child a home and a forever family. Kids are so intuitive and have a way of seeing giving opportunities like this with such clear eyes. You could even give them the opportunity to give some of their own money and explain that whatever they give will be doubled.
To make a donation, go to this link, and in the notes line write “Making Home Here is matching my donation.”
Matt and I will check the page at the end of the week and make an additional donation that matches the total amount given by the Making Home Here community.
We’re asking for $5, but we’ll double any amount you give.
Matchable donations will be accepted through Saturday at midnight, and Matt and I will report back on Monday with how much you all raised to help bring Kai home.
Thank you for considering being a part of this precious boy’s journey and supporting the Boden family. One person, one family, and every dollar makes a difference.
Have a great week, friends! I’ll be back tomorrow with the second post in our Travel Series: all about navigating airports and flying with kids! See you then.
