There are very few places we’ve visited that truly feel just as magical the second time around — especially when the second trip looks completely different from the first.
And yet, that’s exactly what we found at The Lodge at Primland.
We’ve experienced this mountain escape in two totally different seasons of life — once as a couple, slipping away for intentional time together, and once as a family of six, chasing adventure with four kids in tow. Somehow, it was perfect for both.
That’s rare.
Tucked away in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Meadows of Dan, Virginia, Primland feels like a hidden world. The winding drive in sets the tone — the busyness of life slowly fades in the rearview mirror, replaced by rolling mountain views and the kind of quiet that feels restorative from the very first breath.
Primland as a Couples Escape

When Matt and I visited on our own, Primland felt romantic in the most effortless way.
Mornings were slow and peaceful — coffee with panoramic mountain views, mist lifting off the hills, nowhere to rush. We spent hours at the spa, lingering longer than we normally would, actually finishing conversations without interruption (parents, you know what a gift that is).
Evenings felt cinematic. Elevated dining that turns a meal into an experience. Thoughtful courses. Soft lighting. The kind of atmosphere that invites you to stay at the table and talk about dreams, goals, and what the next year could look like.
And then there’s the stargazing.
Primland is home to its own observatory, and stepping inside feels like entering another world. Looking through a professional telescope at constellations and distant galaxies is humbling in the best way — it reminds you how small you are, and yet how meaningful this life together really is.
It was quiet. Intentional. Restorative.
Exactly what we needed in that season.
Primland as a Family Adventure

And then we came back — this time with our kids.
Same property. Totally different pace. Just as unforgettable.
Primland somehow transforms into an outdoor playground without losing its sense of refinement. Wide-open fields become spaces for running and exploring. Trails turn into treasure hunts. Mountain air feels like fuel for curiosity.
Our kids still talk about the horseback riding — crossing streams, winding through wooded paths, feeling just brave enough. There were hands-on activities that kept them engaged, outdoor adventures that stretched their comfort zones, and the kind of space that lets kids be kids without constantly whispering, “be careful.”
As parents, we felt something even more meaningful: margin.
Margin to watch them try new things. Margin to cheer them on. Margin to have conversations around the dinner table without screens or distractions. The luxury here isn’t just in the accommodations — it’s in the gift of time together.
And somehow, even with kids along, there was still room for rest. Early mornings on the balcony before they woke up. Evenings when they fell asleep tired and happy after a full day outside.
Adventure and calm coexisting in one place — that’s not easy to find.
What Makes It So Special

Some resorts lean hard into romance.
Others are clearly built for families.
Primland does something different. It creates space for connection — no matter what stage you’re in.
The setting is undeniably breathtaking. The service is thoughtful without feeling overbearing. The experiences feel curated but never forced. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone anniversary or helping your child saddle a horse for the first time, it meets you there.
It’s no surprise it was named Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2025 No. 1 Resort in the Continental U.S. and No. 1 Resort in the South. But what keeps us coming back isn’t the accolades.
It’s how we feel when we’re there.
Unhurried.
Connected.
Present.
One Destination. Two Completely Different Trips.

As a couple, Primland gave us space to reconnect and dream.
As a family, it gave us space to adventure and grow.
Same mountains.
Same lodge.
Two entirely different experiences.
Both unforgettable.
And that’s why we know we’ll be back again.
